Room 21: Niccolò dell'Abate
This little room is entirely dedicated to the frescoes realized by Niccolò dell’Abate for the Torfanini palace in via Galliera in Bologna.
Detached from the walls of one of the palace room at the beginning of 1960's in order to avoid the complete destruction, they described episodes from the XVIth centurt poem "Orlando Furioso" by Ludovico Ariosto, one of the chivalry poems expression of culture and taste of the Ferrara Este court.
Usually the decoration in private buildings was formed by a simple freize in the upper part of a chamber walls, leaving the underneth for the furniture, but in this case Niccolò painted the entire wall, opening - in a certain sense - the walls to the fictional scenes and landscape.
The scenes depicted have a certain fairytale taste, mainly in the costumes, the landscape and in the battle scene, with an interest for the contemporary detail and for the "oriental" imagery.
The images are those of an elegant chivalry tale, extended on the walls like a series of book pages rather than the classical decoration of continual freize.
Parmesa "Grace" (like that of Parmigianino) and references to the MIchelangelo's anatomies are embodied in a world at half way between the phantasy and the Nature (Dosso and Correggio are the main influences) with the mark of the noblest Emilian Classicism (Girolamo da Carpi, Girolamo da Treviso).
